Image
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 with a bezel-less edge-to-edge display was made available in its flash sale in China on Friday. And as expected with the rapid deman, the smartphone was sold out in just 58 seconds from the beginning of the sale, says a report. There is no information on how many units were placed for sale. The other smartphone, Mi Note 3 that debuted alongside Mi MIX 2, also went on sale the same day - however its sale numbers are not available as of now. According to a report (Translated version) on Chinese website MyDrivers, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 units were sold out entirely in just a matter of 58 seconds. It has posted an official image from Xiaomi showing the milestone that its latest flagship smartphone has earned for itself. As we said, Xiaomi did not officially provide the number of units available for sale, but the compan

iPhone X Feels Like an Evolution of the iPhone, but Not of the Smartphone

Apple needed to wow skeptics with its 10th-anniversary smartphone, the iPhone X. (That's pronounced "iPhone 10," for the curious.) As expected, Apple showed off a phone with an edge-to-edge screen, advanced facial recognition technology and no home button. I got to try it out, spending some brief time with the phone at Apple's launch event Tuesday. ALSO SEEiPhone X First Impressions This is a sleek, beautiful phone. It had all of the more credible features we were promised by a steady drip of leaks. And it is certainly the most futuristic iPhone that Apple's ever produced. But while the iPhone X looks like an evolution of the iPhone, it doesn't feel like an evolution - more broadly - of the smartphone. While the edge-to-edge screen on the iPhone X is crisp and beautiful, it still looks ever-so-slightly boxed in by its thin bezel, as compared to the Samsung Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8. The iPhone X's design doesn't make an appre

Nokia 8 Lands In Asian Market, India Release Not Far Away

Image
HMD Global launched the Nokia 8 in August at an event held in London. The Nokia 8 is the first flagship smartphone running Android OS under the brand name of Nokia and turned a few heads at the time of its launch. The smartphone was highly anticipated because of the nostalgia factor and launched with high-end specifications. At the time of its launch, HMD Global announced that the phone will be made globally available in mid-September. Now, the Nokia 8 has been launched in Malaysia at a price of RM 2,299 (Rs. 35,000 approx.), which means that its entry in other major Asian markets like India is not too far away. That being said, there is no official word on the date of launch of the Nokia 8 in India yet. The smartphone might have a lot of suitors in India as Nokia was one of the most well-known brands in the pre-smartphone era and a chance to hold a premium Nokia handset again might influence quite a few buyers. To recall, the Nokia 8 has a 5.3 inch 2560 x 144

iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3, and Everything Else Announced at September 12 Event

The crowd at Apple's new "spaceship" headquarters saw new smartphones - including a premium version priced at $999 (priced at Rs. 89,000 in India) - as the company commemorated its 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Apple opened the event asking the audience to cover their screens as an audio clip of Steve Jobs played. Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said that it was fitting that Jobs opened the theater - named after him - where the event is taking place. "His greatest expression of his appreciation for humanity would not be a singular product, but rather it would be Apple itself," he said. The bar is very high for Apple. Most of its revenue is generated through the smartphone. Cook promised that the company's new phones would make a splash by defining the future of the smartphone. iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus About midway through Apple's event, Apple's head of marketing Phil Schiller showed off the upgrades to the main iPhone

Apple Edges Closer to Fraught Age of Facial Recognition Tech

Image
A whiff of dystopian creepiness has long wafted in the air whenever facial recognition has come up. Books, movies and television shows have portrayed the technology as mainly a tool of surveillance and social control - aimed by unseen others at you, for their purposes, not your own. Apple sought to reverse that equation Tuesday with the long-anticipated release of its 10th-anniversary smartphone, the iPhone X. It replaces the fingerprint sensor previous generations used for unlocking a user's device with facial recognition technology, while still keeping others from unlocking the phone without the user's knowledge. All users have to do, Apple said at the annual September event dedicated to touting its latest product updates, is look at the iPhone X, which recognises you as the registered user - even if you are wearing glasses or a hat or are sporting a new beard. Though not entirely new - several Android smartphones do something similar already - the technolog

Apple's New A11 Bionic SoC Featuring Neural Engine: Everything You Need to Know

Image
The newly launched iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X are noticeably different-looking from the previous generation iPhone models. But it is what driving these new iPhone models that is arguably far more exciting and displays company's major ambitions. Apple says the new iPhone models - all three of them - are powered by the Apple A11 Bionic SoC, its custom chip that features a 'neural engine' to handle machine learning or artificial intelligence based tasks, powering Face ID, Animoji, and other features. Smartphone companies, including Apple and Huawei, are increasingly placing bets on artificial intelligence for a range of new capabilities that were only a few years ago unimaginable. Huawei, for instance, recently announced Kirin 970, its own custom built chipset featuring "neural processing unit" that it claims will help accelerate image and voice recognition. Apple took its time to reveal what it has in store, but if the demonstration onst

Apple Unveils Animojis, Animated Emojis for iPhone X

Image
Apple is bringing many new changes with iOS 11 including Siri translations, revamped Control Center, new gestures that are compatible with the iPhone X big screen, and much more. One other notable addition is what Apple is calling 'Animoji' or animated emojis that will arrive with iOS 11 for iPhone X users only. This feature takes advantage of the facial recognition software built into the anniversary edition device, and brings to life all the emojis that we use every day. Animojis were demoed on stage at Tuesday's event, showing how emojis come to life mimicking the user's facial movements in real-time. The Animoji feature takes advantage of the Face ID tech embedded inside the iPhone X to provide these real-time animated emojis in an iMessage. These Animojis are available inside Messages directly, and are only compatible with iPhone X for now (for obvious reasons). When you record these Animojis to send a video, they also capture your voice and you can the
